Kevin Normally I make it a rule not to do more than one post per day during the work week, however since today is International Women’s Day 2021, and I’d already made a post scheduled for today beforehand, I’m breaking with tradition and doing two posts today.
This is just for today. If I end up doing two posts in one day again, it’ll be a very rare occurrence for me. Your time is valuable, and this way, I’m making it easy for you to keep up, so you’re not slammed with buttloads of blog posts in one day the way I’ve seen in the past.
There was a blog I used to read often, but they posted so many times in one day that keeping up with them was a full-time job. My inbox ended up getting obliterated with their emails, and I finally unsubscribed to them and took them off my shortlist. No names, btw.
March is Women’s History Month, so it’s only fitting that I do something to acknowledge International Women’s Day for this year.
We’ve been through a lot this year, collectively as a society, and in my own life. In honor of International Women’s Day, let’s talk about women-owned small businesses. This may end up being the seed for future post series, by the way. We’ll see on that one. As a heads-up, this post may contain affiliate links. First on my list of favorites is Shea Shea Bakery. I’ve had the opportunity to buy from this site a couple years back, and I got the cookie scented wax melts, along with the cast-iron skillet wax melter. I had my eye on the cast-iron dutch oven style the melter came in, but it sold out so quickly. If my skillet version is anything to go by, it’s no wonder it sold out like it did! BTW, I’m really loving the designs of the signature candles, and I have my eye on the banana pudding one.
Next up is Anya Lust. I bought a couple pieces from here a few years ago, and I got this maid collar that works great as an evening thing when I’m feeling like I wanna look a bit extra, haha.
Beyond Buckskin is another favorite I’ve been following for years, since Dr. Metcalfe first set it up, to be exact. This started out as a blog, and now it’s a shop selling really cool Native-made pieces at virtually every price range. The best part is that these pieces are all made by cultural insiders who know what can be shared and what shouldn’t be shared, so anyone can wear or own them.
Sister Sky has been a favorite of mine for years. I fell in love with the sweetgrass scented shampoo and conditioner, enough to where I stocked up on it. I ran out of it a couple years ago, and I’m so bummed. Not to worry, though. I’ve got plans to get more after the move, haha.
Anyone ever read any of Louise Erdrich’s books? I read The Birchbark House, and donated a copy of it to the school I volunteered at back in college. Anyway, Louise Erdrich is also the owner of Birchbark Books, an indie book shop dedicated to Native writers and artisans.
On top of all these fun goodies to be had from indie shops and artisans, we’ve also got Sweet Loren’s cookie dough. I had an Ibotta rebate for it one time, and tried it. The place closest to me that carries it is still a bit of a ways to travel for me, so I’ve only had it once.
In the market for some reusable sandwich bags and the like? Lunchskins is another brand to consider. Better yet, someone in your area may have them in stock! I’ve got a couple of them myself, and loved ’em to bits when I brought my lunch at my old job and when I volunteered at the elementary school. Unfortunately it’s been awhile since I had a job that took me outside the home, and I’m sure I’ll find mine when we can start moving into the new house, haha.
