The Long Weekend Docket

A decorative image that says "The Mission Within Weekend Docket."

It’s a holiday week, so that means one thing: weekend time already. A long weekend, to be exact. It’s my first Thanksgiving without my mom here, physically. I’ll be job searching, working on the two assignments I was able to take on through my current job, and continuing to sort through my mom’s things for an online estate sale on eBay. Whatever I can’t sell online, I’ll donate. Whatever’s in bad enough shape that I don’t feel ok donating, goes out to the curb if I can’t salvage it for something I’m making in my mom’s memory.

I’ll also be working on the e-book I’ve mentioned that I’m writing about what happened these past couple years. I’m expanding on a few posts I’ve done about all of this in the book. My goal word count is in the five figures, and so far, I haven’t reached it. I’ll consider it this year’s NaNoWriMo work, breaking with my tradition of adding another installment to the anthology I officially started 11 years ago, but had been working on long before then.

I’m also meeting with the social worker from my mom’s care team, now my care team, to get through this and get help with some seriously confusing paperwork.

Over to you, readers. What are your long weekend plans? Having anything good or going anywhere fun for the holidays? I’d love to hear all about it, and live vicariously through you, so drop it all like it’s hot below, and let’s get the party started!

To ring in the long weekend, I’ve got us some links to talk about, share, what have you.

I’ve got some cornbread mix knocking around in the pantry, and I’ve had a hankering for it for a long time. Maybe now I’ll get around to making some, and use it as the basis for this recipe.

I’ve also got some rice I’d like to use up, and this recipe for rice stuffing is totally on my list of things to make at some point.

I’ve also got plans to make some rocky road. I’ve got the chocolate and the marshmallows, and some cheapie trail mix I found at the dollar store since I couldn’t find Turkish delight anywhere in my area. It probably won’t be the rocky road commonly made in Australia, but I wonder if it’ll be similar.

This variation of rocky road only calls for the chocolate, marshmallows, and walnuts, however.

Helpful hints for cutting perfect slices. I shoulda done this for the new batch of peanut butter fudge I made yesterday.

Since the holiday season’s upon us once again, it’s time for gift guides. I’m loving this one for the tea fan in your life. BTW, I really like that Chip mug and the painted tea set linked in there. Ah, someday.

Ways to look like a baller on a budget. Totally gonna do this!

I linked this post yesterday, but I’m adding it to the link roundup as a signal boost to those of you also looking for work.

This post talks about ways to find yourself after a divorce, and if you can relate, my heart goes out to you. I found something to take away from it, even though it wasn’t related to my circumstances.

There’s some similarities between cults and MLMs, as outlined in this article.

As a job seeker myself, I’ve come across instances of discriminatory practices from companies. No names, but I happened upon this post about how the writer got turned down for a job based solely on their looks. Tima Tima, if you ever find this, know that I’m so sorry they did you like this. I’ve been down that road before myself, and it sucks. They were totally in the wrong, and you deserved better out of them. If this was the way they treated you in the interview, you’ve probably dodged a way bigger bullet than either one of us knows. As one job seeker to another, we’ll find that next great opportunity soon.

This article may be upsetting to some, so if you need to give this one a miss, do so. One of the people listed on the U.S. Marshals 15 Most Wanted has died. I won’t say his name, but he used like a million aliases, and had been on the run for over a decade from charges related to child sexual abuse. A concerned neighbor found him dead in his home earlier this month. Normally I’d say that I’m sorry for his family’s loss, but after what he’s done, the only thing I can say is this: Good riddance to bad rubbish.

Last but not least, a signal boost for a missing child. The last confirmed sighting of 14-year-old Kaylise Renner of Albany, OR was on September 28th. According to the poster, she may need medical help. If you see a child matching her description, or know anything at all about her whereabouts after September 28th, make that call. Let’s get her home to the ones who love her so they can all spend the holidays together.

To end this on a high note, since this is the season of hope, 13-year-old Ta-Kyrah Blackman of Aurora, CO was reported missing on November 23rd, and authorities issued an AMBER Alert. However, a recent news report indicates that she has been found safe, and her abductor’s in custody. Yay! Here’s to a happy holiday season for Ta-Kyrah and her family.
