Around these parts, we’re all about offbeat holidays and observances, and how they tie into self-care. Today is National Mario Day 2023, or Mar10. (lolz, i see what they did thar!) Anyways, I may have mentioned a time or two on here about how I’m kinda into video games. And by kinda into video games, I mean, my beloved Game Boy Advance went w/ me to school ever since I got it.
But don’t worry, peeps. It went straight into my purse for the day as soon as I got off the bus, and came back out as soon as I got home.
One of the games I had was Super Mario World, which also had Mario Brothers as an option to pick when the game started.
It took some time, but I eventually got through the whole game. But let’s rewind for a bit.
Years back, we lived next door to some kids about my age, and they got a Super Nintendo. My memory of them is in bits and pieces, and I don’t even remember what they looked like. I remember one of the games they had was that new one, Super Mario World. I wasn’t even in school yet, and neither were they.
One of their family members played it, and we all watched as Mario flew across the screen, getting those coins, and dodging those flying turtles and the baseballs from the Chargin’ Chucks.
As I got older, I’d play it myself at other ppls houses, but it was never long enough to get through a couple levels on Yoshi’s Island.
I wished we could have cable, so we could get one of those. Turns out we didn’t need cable in order to play these game systems on our TV/VCR combo unit. It wasn’t a Super Nintendo, it was a Sega Genesis that I really need to find a way for someone to fix it. It’s not working atm, and I found some games I’d love to be able to play again sometime, now that I have a J-word.
Super Mario World became my first favorite, w/ Super Mario Brothers 3 coming in at second. The first time I saw that game was at a neighbor’s house. I had the chance to play it sometimes, but it wasn’t every day.
Those games fell by the wayside in my life, since those neighbors moved when we were in elementary school. By then, we had that TV w/ the built-in VCR combo, and movies were now an option where they weren’t before.
It wasn’t for lack of trying, since the VCR we found at a liquidation sale w/ some old family friends we lost track of forever ago ended up not working on the TV we had at the time.
One of those movies we got was a copy of The Wizard. We got it at the old store, when they were offloading their stash of rental videos after they officially phased out that part of the business. I think I was in middle school when we got it, and up until then, I had no idea that movie even existed.
Then again, I had no idea that The Adventures of Super Mario Brothers 3 even existed, until I saw it on the Kartoon Channel on Pluto TV. In fact, I was today years old when I found out about it! After I saw The Wizard, I fell in love w/ it, and it’s been history ever since. I’ve had The Adventures of Super Mario Brothers 3 on as background noise when I got done w/ work and came home from the bus stop.
I was feeling pretty crappy, physically. I’ll say for sure it wasn’t cuz of work. No, it was something else, a certain time of the month, to be more specific.
I had an early dinner, then watched the Mario Brothers 3 marathon, and called it a day. It was probably for the best, since the weather reports this weekend suck ass.
Since my Game Boy Advance doesn’t hold a charge worth shyt anymore, I’ll play as much of Super Mario World as I can on it before the battery dies again, in honor of National Mario Day. I wonder if there’s a way I can get that fixed? I’ll have to explore options on that one.
If it’s a total loss, I’ll keep an ear out for a replacement, but in the meantime, I’ve watched this longplay of Super Mario World a few times during the job search from hell. Ngl, I’ve fallen asleep to it more than once.
Speaking of Mario movies, here’s the trailer for the new Mario movie coming out next month. I got plans to go see it, for sure.
Over to you, readers. Have you ever heard of National Mario Day 2023, or Mar10? Were you today years old when you found out about it being a thing? Or is it old news to you? Got any special plans to celebrate? Yes, no, maybe so? Either way, I’d love to hear all about it, so drop it all like it’s hot and let’s talk.
